PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical amplifier that consists especially of a pre-stage side optical amplifier and a post-stage side optical amplifier and is provided with the function for detecting the signal loss due to a dispersion compensation device inserted between them and automatically compensating the loss. SOLUTION: This optical amplifier is provided with a pre-stage side optical amplifier 31 and a post-stage side optical amplifier 32, a loss detection means 36 that detects the loss of an optical signal produced between the pre-stage side optical amplifier 31 and the post-stage side optical amplifier 32, and a gain control means 37 that compensates fluctuation in optical output power of the entire optical amplifier including the pre-stage side optical amplifier 31 and the post-stage side optical amplifier 32 based on the loss detected by the loss detection means 36. |
