PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To move a magnetic head to the desired data track even when a low-order floppy disk having no positional information about data track is used. SOLUTION: A disk drive is provided with a recording and/or reproducing head for a disk type recording medium, a carriage mounting the head, an actuator for moving the carriage along the principal axis of guide and an optical detector 231 for detecting position of the head. The optical detector 231 is composed of a slit group 232 which is formed in the pitch identical to the track pitch of the disk type recording medium, a tracking scale 234 having an opening 233 formed to detect the outer most circumference position of the disk type recording medium and an optical sensor 237 for detecting the slit group 232 and opening 233. The tracking scale 234 is composed of a track gage 241 providing the slit group 232 and opening 233 and a gate holder 242 for holding this track gage 241.
