A rotary thermal regenerator for a gas turbine engine comprises an annulus including end rings or rims 30, Fig. 4, joined by circumferentially spaced radial stiffener plates 35, heat exchange packs of corrugated, stainless steel plates arranged between the stiffener plates and divided by a series of seal plate assemblies 39, 43 having bosses 41, 44 respectively which, on assembly, abut each other and having an intermediate labyrinth seal element 45 having segmented sealing strips 46, 48 at the cold and hot faces respectively of the matrix. The assemblies 39, 43 are secured by lugs 50 in the end rings 31 and the elements 45 are retained in tension by means mounted on segmented retainer rings 33, 34 of the end rings but are under no pressure from the compacted packs of the heat exchange plates in the matrix since the strip 46 lies between the radially outer edge of plates 39, 43. The bosses 41, 44 provide clearance for the element 45 and the sealing strip 48 lies radially inward of the margins of the plates 39, 43. Sealing bars 67, 69, Fig. 2, located by aligning and drive rollers 65 of the matrix extend across the matrix faces adjacent the strips 46, 49 and means for controlling the clearance therebetween at at least one intermediate span of the strip 46 comprises guide means on the cold side seal bar 67 and follower means on the strips 46. The follower means comprises blocks 70 of tungsten carbide brazed on the strip 46 to project radially outwardly and the guide means comprises an adjustable shoe 71 mounted by studs 73 on the seal bar 67, the alignment of which is adjusted by wedges 74. The bar has ramp surfaces 75, 76 at its ends and the strip 46 is deflected slightly inwardly each time it passes through the seal. In a modification, the mid-points of the sealing strips of adjacent pairs of sealing plates are coupled together to form labyrinth assemblies which engage the guide shoes 71 on the seal bar. The assemblies comprise a follower formed of blocks of several parts coupled by pins to the sealing strip, Fig. 12, not shown.
