An automotive MacPherson strut unit has a spring rate which depends upon the position of the main spring. The unit consists of a housing (5), a main spring (2), a pretension spring (3), lower (4) and upper (6) spring plates, and a supplementary spring (1). The supplementary spring (1) is progressive, is positioned between the housing and upper spring plate, and adds to the action of the main spring.
