The invention relates to a method and an device for executing control and monitoring measurements in optical transmission paths (101, 111) serving to measure or control parameters of the transmission path (101, 111) during regular operation and without disrupting the latter and to monitor the transmission path (101, 111) for detecting attempted tapping. To this end, a control signal is injected into the transmission path (101, 111) parallel to the transmission signal, said control signal having a wavelength differing from that of the transmission signal. After passing through the transmission path (101, 111), the signal is reflected back and evaluated. In order to reflect the control signal, a wavelength-selective reflecting device (108, 112) is used which transmits the transmission signal practically without any interference, e.g. a dichroic mirror (109). The reflected control signal is detected by a detection device (105) and evaluated for polarization, intensity, signal shape and other properties, whereby the properties of the transmission path can be determined and/or unwarranted manipulation of the transmission system can be detected.
