Analog signal recording and playback system with externally selectable duration capability

An analog storage array (150) comprises several segments with several memory cells. An input circuit stores messages in the array during a record operation, while an output circuit retrieves messages from the array during a playback operation. A controller (180) controls the record and playback operations based on several inputs. When first and/or second inputs are asserted and a third input is in a first state, a record operation is performed in the segments corresponding to the first or second input. When the third input is in a second state, a playback operation is initiated. The input circuit includes amplifiers (110,115), an automatic gain control (AGC) circuit (120) and an anti-aliasing filter (130). An output circuit includes a smoothing filter (140) and an output amplifier (145). The storage segments include a security feature to prevent overwriting.
