PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a thermal transfer recorder holding a variety of colors of ribbon cassettes which can be replaced automatically and quickly. SOLUTION: A plurality of cassette holder plates for holding ribbon cassettes 8 while stacking in a plurality of stages are arranged side by side on a plane facing the carriage 2 of a holding cover 14. The carriage 2 is arranged with photosensors 34 for reading out an identification mark 32 put on the ribbon cassette 8 corresponding, in number, to the stages of the ribbon cassette 8 being held on the cassette hilder plate.
