PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antiferroelectric liq. crystal compsn. which is excellent in uniform alignability and exhibits a small spontaneous polarization by incorporating a specific five-membered heterocyclic compd. into the same and to obtain a large-area, high-accurcy, high-preformance liq. crystal element by using the same. SOLUTION: This liq. crystal compsn. contains at least one five-membered heterocyclic compd. As the five-membered heterocyclic compd., a compd. having a backbone represented by the formula (wherein X is S or O; and Y and Z are each CH or N) is pref. For instance, a compd. represented by the formula: R1-A1-B1-A2-B2-A3-B3-R2 (wherein, R1 and R2 are each independently 1-20C alkyl; A1, A2, and A3 are each independently a single bond, an optionally substd. 1,4-phenylene or 1,4-cyclohexylene group, or the like provided at least one of A1 to A3 is a thiophene-2,5-diyl or thiazole-2,5-diyl group, or the like; and B1 and B2 are each independently a single bond, -COO-, -CH2O-, -CH2CH2-, or the like).
