PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fully automated electric washing machine being simple in constitution and inexpensive and having high safety. SOLUTION: A meshing type clutch/detent device 7 supporting a washing-cum- dewatering tub 5 and an agitator 6 is insert molded at the bottom of an outer tub 1 while being partially assembled. The clutch/detent device 7 engages or locks a dewatering shaft 7e by meshing. A drive motor 9 is of the pole-change type and varies driving speed. A lid 17 is of the normally locked type and is electrically braked and unlocked in accordance with the command to open the lid.
