A press for manufacturing articles of foamed plastics e.g. polystyrene comprises a two part mould 13, 14, Fig. 1, the parts being relatively movable together by fluid rams 12, Fig. 3, and a locking cylinder 21 connected to one of the mould parts (e.g. connected to the frame to which the lower mould part is also fixed) having a locking member engageable with eounterholding means 31 connected to the other mould part (e.g. connected to cylinder 9 of ram 12 to which the upper mould part is also fixed) when the parts are closed together, the connection between the locking cylinder 21 and locking member including a lost-motion mechanism. Thus, on disengaging the locking device and counter-holding means, there is a limited amount of free movement of the locking cylinder 21 before the cylinder 21 moves the locking member out of engagement. As shown in Fig. 3, the locking device comprises a locking piston rod 22 of cylinder (21) carrying a piston 23 reciprocable in cylinder 24 of a further piston 19 which effects the engagement, piston 23 abutting faces 27, 28 of cylinder 24 on withdrawal and extension of piston rod 22. |
