PURPOSE: A method for detecting the remaining amount of a recording medium is provided to figure a recordable time of the recording medium. CONSTITUTION: A method for detecting a remaining amount of a recording medium comprises: a first step checking the remaining amount of the recording medium; a second step recording a target recording signal to the recording medium; a third step recording the target recording signal to the recording medium after a certain typed compression; and a fourth step comparing the reduced remaining amounts of the recording medium in the second step and the third step for figuring a recordable time of the recording medium according to the certain typed compressing ratio.
