SWEETENING PROCESS OF PETROLEUM HYDROCARBON

PURPOSE: A process for sweetening petroleum hydrocarbon is provided to remove a polar material such as naphthenic acid by using an adsorbent such as silica gel instead of a conventional washing tower using caustic soda solution. CONSTITUTION: At the front end of a sweetening process for oxidizing sulfur mercaptan contained in petroleum hydrocarbon to disulfide, an adsorption tower filled with an adsorbent which can combine with hydrogen is constructed to remove extremely small quantities of polar material by passing petroleum hydrocarbon. The adsorption tower is regenerated by operating two or more adsorption towers continuously or by turns according to characteristics of raw material suitable to the reaction tower. The petroleum hydrocarbon is selected from gasoline, naphtha, kerosene, aviation oil, and light gas oil. A high value added chemical product may be produced from the concentrated polar material byproduct.
