PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To convert even an original that is printed in two-color printing or with colors except black into a natural monochrome image by discriminating colors used in an input image, deciding a mixing ratio of color components in accordance with the colors, mixing the color components according to the mixing ratio and converting it into a monochrome image. SOLUTION: A scanner, etc., inputs an image of a comic magazine as an original in every prescribed unit in step S1. A color analyzing means discriminates colors used in an image in step S2. A mixing ratio calculating means decides the mixing ratio of each component of red, green and blue in step S3. An image converting means mixes red, green and blue components and converts an input image into a monochrome image according to a mixing ratio in step S4. An image outputting means outputs an image after the conversion in step S5. In such a case, the color analyzing means calculates representative hue and the variance from the distributions of hue and saturation with which the input image is converted, next decides the existence of black pixels from a lightness histogram and decides color used in the image.
