PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply detect an accurately absolute angle of rotation of a multiple revolving rotor by calculating the angle of rotation based on a magnitude of a difference of both detected angles linearly output from first and second detecting means. SOLUTION: The rotary angle detector calculates an absolute rotary angle of a steering wheel by an absolute angle calculator 14 based on outputs of a first potentiometer 10 and a second potentiometer 12. Here, both the potentiometers 10 and 12 are constituted by incorporating two brushes rotating together with a rotary shaft and a ring-like resistor. In the case of inputting the outputs of the potentiometers 10 and 12 to the calculator 14, the calculator 4 calculates an absolute rotary angleωof the wheel based on a specific procedure.
