PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a apparatus for detecting the excrement height in an excrement tank of traffic means which is capable of accurately detecting the excrement height, without being influenced by grains of excrement and easy for maintenance, without leaking odor and has a long life. SOLUTION: A multi-step type protective pipe 3 composed of a plurality of mutually brazed protective pipes having holes 31 of adequate size on the whole enough to enclose a float 2 and sensor rod 11 is provided so that large grains of wastes are blocked from entering the multi-step type protective pipe 3 because of the size limit of the holes 31, but only the liq. and very small wastes having no influence on the lifting of the float 2 enter, and a magnet provided on the float 2 inside face and detector circuit in the sensor rod 11 are sensed to measure the level of the liq. in the multi-step type protective pipe 3 and indicate it on a meter panel to notice whether the excrement is to be removed.
