PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the method and device for two-dimensional coordinate input which easily point an X coordinate and a Y coordinate with respect to input of two-dimensional coordinates. SOLUTION: This two-dimensional coordinate input device is provided with a mouse member 1 which can be moved on a plane, a ball 2 which points a position, an X axis encoder 5 which detects the extent of movement in the X-axis direction of the ball 2 to generate the detection output in the X-axis direction, a Y axis encoder 6 which detects the extent of movement in the Y-axis direction of the ball 2 to generate the detection output in the Y-axis direction, an inhibition selecting switch 3 which selectively outputs an output inhibition signal which inhibits one output of the X axis encoder 5 and the Y axis encoder 6, and first and second AND gate circuit 7 and 8 which inhibit one output of the X axis encoder 5 and the Y axis encoder 6 in response to the output inhibition signal from the switch 3. Since one of detection outputs of extents of movement in the X-axis direction and the Y-axis direction can be inhibited by this constitution, and an X coordinate and a Y coordinate are easily pointed with respect to input of two-dimensional coordinates.
