PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly recognize the shape of a dense image composed of deformed and unclear line elements by deforming a template generated from the set of line elements approximated to line elements composing of a recognizing object, and extracting the features of a recognizing object group. SOLUTION: An inspection object 3 is detected by a passing sensor 5 while linearly moving the inspection object 3 at equal speed through a conveyer 4 and with this detection as a trigger, a laser diode 1 is intermittently irradiated at specified intervals. At the same time, when the upper surface of the conveyer 4 is photographed from the upside by a television camera 6, an optical pattern (line group) arranging linear irradiation patterns (line elements) in the sectrial shape is formed in the photographed image. At such a time, the template composed of the set of approximate line elements approximating the respective line elements of a line group and making them into parameter is generated. Next, when the template is deformed based on the shape parameter of the line group extracted from the image and the geometrical restrict condition of line elements, while referring to the shape of respective approximate line elements of the deformed template, the features of respective line elements composing of the line group are extracted.
