A control device comprises a support arm with an operating element located in a region of the free end of the arm and is located near a steering wheel of the car. The operating element is a push-button switch with which a shift position of the gearbox or the pre-select stage of an auto gearbox can be changed in steps. The support arm (2) has an optical display for the visualization of the shift position or pre-select stage. The position of the free end (15) of the support arm can be adjusted individually. The support arm is flexible and is a swan-neck, inclined to the car driver.
