To clean the mantle surfaces of operating rollers in a high speed papermaking machine, where they have elastic mantles, the rollers (1) are rotated at a given speed during surface grinding which matches their working speed in the papermaking and/or paper coating machine. The roller (1) surfaces are ground by a grinding disk (2) applied to the mantle surface, with a disk (2) rotating speed equal to or faster than the roller (1) speed. The grinding disk (2) rotates in the opposite direction to the roller (1) rotation, or the roller (1) and grinding disk (2) rotate in the same direction. Dust generated by the grinding action is blown clear, or extracted by suction.
