Apparatus for laser welding workpiece (10) along a seam (12) incorporates at least one deflector mirror (2, 4) installed in at least one bearing for moving the focus (F) of the laser beam across the seam, and is driven by a drive (20). A control system (40) governs the drive dependent on a signal (Y1). This signal indicating the position of seam (12) is provided by tracking sensor unit (32).
