Automated quality control of poultry carcasses by reflected light analysis. Plucked poultry carcases are subject to automated quality control and selection using colour analysis of back-scattered light reflected from the outer surfaces of the carcasses. A carcass is illuminated by a lamp (1) and the reflected light transmitted through an aperture (2) is detected by a sensor unit (3) , which may be a digital colour camera. The selection may be based on either the whole of the carcass or restricted to commercially important parts e.g. breast and drumsticks, by using multiple sensors. The red, green and blue component light measurements are computer analyzed to decide the appropriate market quality or commercial use.
