PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying a crude spiroglycol by heating and mixing the spiroglycol with water and a water-separable organic solvent, separating the aqueous layer, and subsequently cooling the organic solvent layer to recrystallize the spiroglycol, capable of purifying the spiroglycol into the highly pure spiroglycol which is useful as a polymer raw material, etc., and has a melt Hazen color number of a specific value or smaller. SOLUTION: This method for purifying a crude spiroglycol (concretelyβ,β,β',β'-tetramethyl-2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro[5,5]undecane-3,9-diethanol) comprises thermally dissolving and mixing (A) the crude spiroglycol in (B) water (preferably containing an acidic substance, an alkaline substance, an oxidizing substance or a reducing substance) and a water-separable organic solvent (preferably a 4-10C aliphatic alcohol) to extract impurities into the aqueous layer, separating the aqueous layer, and subsequently cooling the organic solvent layer to recrystallize the spiroglycol, thus purifying the component A into the purified spiroglycol having a melt Hazen color number of <=30 after held in the atmosphere at 260 deg.C for 5 hr.
