PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly detect the position of an intake and exhaust valve with a simple and compact structure by learning a reference value of a valve lift sensor to the intake and exhaust valve on the basis of the output values of the valve lift sensor detected in the first full-open and full-close operations of the intake and exhaust valve. SOLUTION: An intake and exhaust valve 4 supported by a valve stem guide 3 of a cylinder head 2 is opened and closed by the electromagnetic coils 5, 6 respectively for opening and closing the valve. The electromagnetic coils 5, 6 are driven and controlled by a microcomputer 31 through the electromagnetic coil driving circuits 36, 37 respectively for closing and opening the valves. A case 11 accomodating a valve lift sensor 10 used for detecting the lifting amount of the intake and exhaust valve 4 is bonded to an upper part of a york 9 accomodating the electromagnetic coil 6 for closing the valve. On this occasion, the output values at the first full-open and full-close of the valve are stored as the reference values so that they are learned in the start of an engine, whereby the fluctuation of the sensor output value can be corrected and the position of the value can be correctly detected.
