PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obviate self-ignition of premixture before the normal ignition by means of ignition fuel, in the premixing type forced ignition combustion system for a diesel engine. SOLUTION: A specified amount of recirculating gas 20 of engine exhaust is guided into a cylinder 1 together with air from an inlet port 15 at a side nearer to a main fiel valve 5, mixing this gas 20 in an area X in the cylinder 1, and the gas composition of the area X is composed to be reduced in O2 and increased in CO2 and H2 O, thereby discriminate it from the composition of air only in another area Y. If fuel is sprayed from the main fuel valve 5 in this state to form premixture, self-ignition is hard to occur since O2 is poor in the area X. So the fuel is sprayed to the area Y from an ignition fuel valve 7 and ignited for a combustion of lean premixture, therefore ignition can be surely done without entailing self-ignition of the premixture.
