A sensor is provided having a shaft rotatably secured in a base and connectable to the gearbox of a vehicle to be rotatable thereby, and having a magnet mounted on the base to create a magnetic field about the shaft, the shaft having a plurality of slots therein to create a regular disturbance in the magnetic field on rotation thereof, and a pair of Hall Effect probes mounted on the base to measure such disturbance.
