Cultivation of hothouse plants in vertical columns with their roots immersed in water-absorbent substrate and their foliage protruding through perforations in plastic foil sheath of supporting lattice

Plants are grown in a greenhouse in vertical columns two metres tall with their roots (11) embedded in a water-absorbent substrate (4) and foliage (6) protruding. The walls (2,3) of the column are of coarse mesh sheathed in UV-resistant plastic sheet. The outer wall (2) has perforations (5) into which plant roots (11) are inserted. A plastic water bag (8) is sealed to the inner column (3) just below the perforations (9) through which water (10) flows into the substrate (4). Surplus water drains from perforations (7) in the base of the outer column.
