PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and safely obtain the subject derivative useful as a liquid crystal material by reaction between a specific oxazoline derivative and an acidic dehydrating agent. SOLUTION: This derivative of formula II is obtained by reaction between (A) an oxazoline derivative of formula I [ R is a (1-7C alkoxyl-substituted) 1-20C alkyl, alkenyl or the like; (m) is 0 or l; when (m)=1, ring A is (trans-1,4- cyclohexylene- or F-substituted) 1,4-phenylene; Xa and Xb are each H or F; Ra to Rd are each H or a 1-5C alkyl] and (B) an acidic clehydrating agent (e.g. phosphorus oxychloride); wherein the component A is prepared, for example, by reaction between (i) a compound of formula III (Y is a halogen such as Br, I or Cl) and (ii) an organometallic reactant of formula IV (Za is MgBr, MgI, MgCl, or a metal atom such as Li, or a metal atom-contg. group) in the presence of (iii) a transition metal catalyst. |
