PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems originating from leakage of a cooling water or distortion of a cylinder liner and reduce the costs by eliminating a correcting process with the deformation of cylinder liner predicted. SOLUTION: A cylinder block 1 and cylinder head 2 are fastened together by a plurality of head bolts with a gasket 13 interposed, and a cylinder liner 14 is attached to the liner installing parts 11 and 12 of the cylinder block 1. The head-side end face 14a of the cylinder liner 14 is retracted from the gasket abutting surface 1a of the cylinder block 1, and a flange 15 on the cylinder liner 14 is fixed to the liner installing parts 11 and 12 using fixing screws 19.
