For the finishing of webs of paper, and the like, air streams (28) are blown from one side to the other at rolled or unrolled webs. The blown air has a moisture content which is higher than the ambient air round the machine. The blown air streams directed over the machine have a moisture content which is 30-60% higher than the ambient air, or 60-95% higher and preferably 80-90% higher. The moisture content of the blow air streams is such that, on mixing with the ambient air round one or more paper rolls or webs, creates an air zone to bring the paper rolls or webs at the machine to the required level. The blown air is at a temperature of 5-15 deg C lower than the air temperature round the machine, and preferably <= 20 deg C and typically 16 deg C. The blown air streams are directed to move downwards to mix with the ambient air round the paper rolls or webs. The air is blown from one side of the paper rolls or webs to the other side at a speed of <= 0.8 m/s and typically <= 0.5 m/s, so that the air sinks down to the ground at the other side of the machine. The blown air is taken from the ambient air in the machine room, and passed through a humidifier which also reduces the air temperature, before being blown out. The blown air rises, with a temperature increase, to mix with the ambient air round the machine. The blown air moisture is set by evaporation or steaming. An Independent claim is included for an assembly with blowers (24,26) to deliver one or more air streams (28) with a raised moisture content. |
