A protective helmet having a visor 20, Fig. 3, movable in a pocket 18 between the head receiving shell 10 and a visor cover 14 has interengaging members 47 and 55 carried by the cover and visor respectively to normally retain the visor in a retracted position but capable of disengaging upon application of an adjustable preselected minimum G force to the helemt to release the visor into an eye shielding position. The visor 20 is supported for movement in a pair of track elements 23, each comprising a member 29, Fig. 6, mounted between the cover 14 and shell 10 and having an arcuate groove 27 in which slides a bead 37 connected to the side edge of the visor. To prevent free movement of the visor, a straight wire spring 41 is connected to the bead 37 to bear against the side surface of the member 29. One of the interengaging members 55, Figs. 3 and 10, is comprised of a member 57 releasably connected to the visor 20 by a flanged stud 62 and having flanges 68 bearing lugs 70 adapted to engage in the depressions of a corrugated strip 47 mounted on the inner surface of the cover 14. A shaft 72 of the member 57 projects through a slot in the corrugated strip 47 and a registering slot 45 in the cover 14 to be connected with a slider 58 and a button 59. To move the visor 20, the button 59 is manually depressed against the action of a spring 60 to cause the ribs 70 to be disengaged from the corrugated strip 47, the slider 58 moved along the slot 45 to the desired visor position and the button 59 released to locate the ribs 70 in another depression of the corrugated strip 47. Upon the application of a preselected minium G force, the bias of the spring 60 is overcome to cause the visor 20 to move down into the eye shielding position. The minimum G force may be varied by varying the biasing force of the spring 60 by screwing the button 59 further into or out of the shaft 72. |
