Drilling or boring machine tool has a sensor (5) positioned at the work end (5) of the drilling tool at a distance from both the tool (5) and the work-piece (3). The drill tool has an inner channel in which flows a lubricant or cooling fluid. This is used by the sensor (9) as a signal medium to indicate that the drilling tool is operating correctly and is not stuck or broken. If the tool is stuck or broken the bit will not penetrate the work-piece and the sensor will not be activated.
