<p>An apparatus for fabricating opto-electronic devices (100) on a monolithic support structure (107). Incorporated into the support structure are registration structures (109) that are used to align various components associated with the device, eliminating the need for manual alignment. The registration structures are fabricated using conventional lithographic techniques. Utilizing the registration structure, a gain module is fabricated comprising at least a pump laser (101), an optical element (103), and a solid state gain medium (105). The pump laser is a semiconductor diode laser that pumps the edge of the gain medium. The optical element collimates and/or focuses the emissions from the pump laser onto the laser medium. The gain module may include several pump lasers, increasing the achieved output power. The gain module projects through a cutout in a miniature optical bench (907), which comprises a material with a low coefficient of thermal expansion. The surface of the bench is metallized, preferably in a pattern of gold pads. Optical components to be attached to the bench are also metallized, allowing them to be soldered into place.</p> |
