A process for the application of a pigmented or metallic layer from a foil to a substrate comprises: (i) applying an adhesive to the substrate; (ii) curing the adhesive; (iii) heating the substrate bearing the cured adhesive to render the adhesive tacky; and (iv) transferring the pigmented or metallic layer from the foil to the adhesive-bearing areas of the substrate. The adhesive is applied in printing station 17 and cured by ultra-violet light source 23 so that it is not transferred to turner bar 24 which re-directs the coated substrate to the foiling station 25. Material is transferred from foil 28 to the substrate between heated roller 26 and impression roller 27. The adhesive comprises (i) a thermoplastic resin, eg a styrene resin, (ii) a polymerisable component, eg a polyether-forming epoxide, and (iii) a chain terminating agent to control the extent of chain length growth of the polymerisable component. It may include an ultra-violet polymerisation initiator. |
