PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal medium capable of simultaneously exhibiting a high resistance, a low threshold value, a low viscosity, a wide nematic phase range, good transparency, and high heat and light stability and useful for electrooptic liquid crystal displays, etc., by compounding a specific substituted terphenyl compound. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal medium contains the mixture of polar compounds having positive dielectric anisotropic properties as base materials. Therein, a compound of formula I [R is H, an alkyl (substituted by one CN or CF3 group or by one or more halogen atoms) or the like; A<1> is trans-1,4- cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or the like; Z<1> is CO-O, CH2 O, a single bond or the like; Y is F, Cl, a halogenated 1-6C alkyl or the like; L is H or F; (m) is 0 or 1], if necessary, further a compound of formula II [R0 is a 1-9C (oxa) alkyl or the like; X<0> is F, Cl or the like; Y<1> and Y<2> are each L; (r) is (m)], a compound of formula III (Y<3> and Y<4> are each Y<1> ), etc., are contained. |
