PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new histidine derivative having an anti-free radical property and especially an effect of inactivating singlet oxygen. SOLUTION: This new histidine derivative is a compound of formula I [(n) is 0-5; (n') is 1-16; R is a side chain of an amino acid; X is NHCO, SO2 , NHCOCO or the like; R' is a 6-22C alkyl or the like; Q<+> is H<+> or a cation], e.g. N-octylaminocarbonyl-β-alanyl-L-histidine. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II (Y is a group capable of activating an acidic functional group) with preferably histidine having a pure optical form or a mixed optical forms (D; L; D, L) at -10 to +40 deg.C in an inert solvent (dichloromethane, dioxane, etc.), in the presence of a base (e.g.; sodium hydrogencarbonate). Further, it is preferable to prepare a composition by including the compound of formula I in a physiologically permissible medium by approximately 0.001-15 wt.% and use for a cosmetic material and a medicine.
