High voltage transistor coil ignition for IC engine

A high voltage transistor coil ignition (1) for an IC engine has a current control device (6) assigned to each spark plug for controlling a current through the coil (2) via a transistor (7) controlling the current. Also assigned is an ion current measuring device (5) for the detection of an ion current flowing after the finish of the spark. The current is determined and the spark duration resulting from it for at least one previous ignition and the control of the current takes place so that a safe ignition takes place, decaying after a specified time. The specified time is determined by the current remaining in the coil after ignition as residual energy decaying exponentially.
