A method for determining the presence or absence of potential acid sulphate soils in the earth, which includes passing a time-varying current between at least one pair of current electrodes (14, 18) in the earth, measuring the potential difference between one or more pairs of locations in the earth, and evaluating the impedance measured to determine the presence or absence of potential acid sulphate forming minerals.
