A recording medium library device and a control method therefor capable of a continued processing without shutting down the entire system even when transporting of a recording medium such as a cassette tape fails; wherein a cassette library (1) comprises a drive device (13) for recording and reproducing information on/from cassettes (K), cassette storing shelves (14, 15) having many storing units for storing cassettes (K) and a cassette transporting machine (16) for transporting cassettes; and a library controller (2) controls the cassette transporting machine (16) to transport cassettes (K) between the cassette storing shelf (15) and the like and the drive device (13) and returns cassettes (K) temporarily to the original positions to inform the return to a host computer (3) when the cassette transporting machine (16) fails to execute a cassette transporting command.
