A positive ophthalmic lens (50) and a negative ophthalmic lens (110) each having superior optical performance, a thin lens center thickness, a thin lens edge thickness, and a good external appearance. Each type of lens has an optical center and a meridional line, and comprises an objectwise first aspherical surface (54 or 114) with a first meridional curvature and a first sagittal curvature, an eyewise second aspheric surface (56 or 116) with a second meridional curvature and a second sagittal curvature. The first and second meridional curvatures are given as rho m, the first and second sagittal curvatures are given as rho s, and a curvature differential between curvature rho m and curvature rho s is the curve differential Z = rho m - rho s. For the positive ophthalmic lens, Z monotonically decreases in a range from the optical center to a distance of at least 20 mm along the meridional line. For the negative ophthalmic lens, Z monotonically increases in a range from the optical center to a distance of at least 20 mm along the meridional line. <IMAGE> |
