PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst that gives a polyolefin having a high molecular weight with a high activity at an industrially practical reaction temperature by constituting it of a divalent organic rare earth metal complex and a compound selected between an organic lithium and an organic magnesium. SOLUTION: A catalyst is constituted of a divalent organic rare earth metal complex being an organometallic compound consisting of three components of an element selected from scandium, yttrium and the lanthanide series of the periodic table, a ligand selected from cyclopentadiene derivatives and a Lewis base component, preferably a bis(pentamethyl cyclopentadienyl) samarium bis(tetrahydrofuranate), and one or more compounds selected between an organic lithium and an organic magnesium, preferably butylethyl magnesium or normal butyllithium. The catalyst is preferably used for polymerization of ethylene alone or copolymerization of ethylene with anotherα-olefin.
