PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably decide the quality of a paper sheet with high precision without misdeciding the quality of the paper sheet. SOLUTION: The mean valueμy and standard deviationσy of measurement data on the transmitted light quantity and reflected light quantity of a paper sheet 1 scanned with laser light are found by a computer 36, which further finds a correlation coefficientγfrom the mean valueμy , standard deviationσy , and their reference data, decides the quality of the paper sheet 1 from the correlation coefficientγ, and finds Mahalanobis distance D by using the mean valueμy , standard deviationσy , and correlation coefficientγand compares the distance D with a threshold (u) to decide the quality of the paper sheet 1.
