A device to inflate a car passenger protection device has the following: devices to define a chamber; inflation medium with a specified pressure in the chamber; an initiator to initiate the release of the inflation medium from the chamber which has a condenser whose capacity changes with the pressure in the chamber; and devices to sense the change of capacity of the condenser. The capacity of the condenser rises when the pressure falls in the chamber. The initiator has an electrically conducting outer housing member, an electrically conducting inner housing member and devices to provide a gap, furthermore extending between the outer and inner housing members. The condenser has the inner and outer hosing members plus the gap.
