<p>In a wireless communications system, a subscriber unit transmit power is determined (22). Thereafter, a power margin is determined by substracting the subscriber unit transmit power from a maximum transmit power (24). In response to a current communication mode of the subscriber unit, a predetermined power margin requirement for the current communication mode, and the current power margin (26), a communication mode quality is estimated (28). Either the power margin or communication mode quality may be indicated at the subscriber unit, or reported to the infrastructure (30) of the wireless communications system. In response to an unsatisfactory power margin or communication mode quality, the infrastructure may make adjustments to improve service.</p> |
