<p>A joint, for sealing a rotary shaft in its housing, in which the surface of contact between the shaft and the housing consists on either side of a sealing material having a non-zero interfacial angle with the liq. to be retained, completely prevents the loss of liq. with radioactive contamination from nuclear reactors. Favoured materials for the seal are PTFE or silicones, giving with water an interfacial angle of >=30 degrees, and pref. >=90 degrees; the shaft may be of steel and is coated with a layer of PTFE by sintering or enclosed in a tubular sheath of PTFE.</p> |
