The catheter has a shaft (3). An X-ray tube (4) with an anode (6) and a cathode (5) is arranged in the distal end of the shaft (3). The distal end of the shaft has at least one flow channel (13-18) with an inlet and an outlet opening for body fluids (19) which flow at least along the X-ray tube. The body fluids flowing along the flow channels cause cooling of the X-ray tube on operation of the tube. Preferably an arrangement e.g. a cone shaped attachment is provided to feed the body fluids to the inlet opening of the flow channels (13-18). An inflatable balloon (21) may be provided near the inlet opening. The medium to inflate the balloon may be provided or removed via a channel (22).
