Process for preparing vitreous dyes having liquid crystal properties at ambient temperature. The process for preparing thin films of glass of variable thickness containing microdroplets of liquid crystals such as K-15 and MBBA or commercial mixtures such as E-7, Phase 5, ZLI-3775, ZLI-1275, and Cholesteryl linoleate by means of the alcohol solution solgel process, organosilane compounds and organoaluminium compounds and water at ambient temperature. The microdrops vary from 0.1 to 200 microns diameter depending upon the nature of the reagents and the process used for their preparation. In the form of films these materials yield an optically sensitive response to an external electrical field having variable on and off response times which are strictly linked to the type of precursor used and the stoichiometric ratio between the components in the solution. The optical properties of these materials are also temperature-sensitive. <IMAGE>
