TAIL-BITING TURBO CODE-ENCODER AND ASSOCIATED DECODER

A method of creating tail biting turbo codes, and the associated apparatus, are described herein. According to the method, the flushing bits that are conventionally associated with the error correcting capabilities of the encoding scheme, are replaced with an equal number of tail biting bits that are drawn from the raw data bits of the source. Full tail biting is achieved while maintaining the recursion of turbo codes. In addition, a method is provided to allow a tail biting, frame oriented, turbo codes to be constructed. The reduction in the number of bits used for overhead this invention achieves an increase in the data transmission rate.
