PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium whose coercive force is higher, whose saturation magnetization is larger, whose noise is small, whose output in a high-frequency region is large and in which a cobalt-containing maghemite magnetic thin film without the distortion of a reproducing waveform is obtained industrially and economically favorably without a limitation on the material of a substrate. SOLUTION: A plastic substrate and a cobalt-containing maghemite thin film which is formed on the plastic substrate compose a magnetic recording medium. In the magnetic recording medium, a nickel oxide substrate film is formed between the substrate and the cobalt-containing maghemite thin film, the cobalt-containing maghemite thin film comprises a face interval which corresponds, to a face interval in a (311) plane of 2.510Åor lower, a face interval in a (222) plane of 2.415Åor lower or a face interval in a (220) plane of 2.950Åor lower, and any plane intensity value of an X-ray diffraction pattern in any plane of the (311) plane, the (222) plane and the (220) plane exceeds 0.5 with reference to the peak intensity value of an X-ray diffraction pattern in a (400) plane.
