Method of laundering fabric using aqueous presoak detergent with optical dye and fluorescent brightener

The appearance of laundry as cellulosic fabrics is whitened by firstly presoaking the dirty laundry with an aqueous composition including a surfactant, a solvent, and 0.001% to 1% by weight of an optical brightener and then extracting the presoak composition from the laundry. Thereafter a second brightening step includes washing the laundry in an aqueous composition including a surfactant package of a conventional laundry detergent and 0.001% to 1% by weight of an optical brightener. This tandem brightening step produces whiter appearing laundry than produced by a single brightening wash.
