摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a friction material which is excellent in fade resistance and hardly attacks a mating material by compounding a fibrous substrak, a binder, and a filler and by imparting a specified porous structure to the material. SOLUTION: This friction material comprises a fibrous substrate pref. contg. metal fibers and inorg. fibers pref. in an amt. of at least 25 wt.%, a binder (e.g. a phenol resin), and a filler (e.g. graphite) and has such a porous structure that the accumulated porosity of pores with pore sizes of 3. 5μm or higher is 2 vol.% or lower and that the accumulated porosity of pores with pore sizes of 0.5-3.5μm is 3 vol.% or higher. Pref., the porous structure of the portion ranging from the friction surface to the depth of 8 mm is such that the accumulated porosity of pores with pore sizes of 3. 5μm or higher is 2% or lower and the accumulated porosity of pores with pore sizes of 0.5-3.5μm is 3 vol. % or higher. In addition, at least the friction surface is pref. subjected to scorching and the scorching is pref. applied to a portion at the depth of 2-4 mm from the friction surface.</p>
